Tanjong Pagar capacity planner

Indicative research prototype

How to read this

Streets: Colour is speed as a share of free flow, green to red. Width is vehicles per hour. Dots are sampled vehicles by trip type.
Capacity planner: The planner offers each prospective home's morning-peak car trips (07:00 to 09:00), and those of the district's jobs and services. Each trip travels or opts out, and a trip that travels fails when it is far slower than free flow or spends a minute in a region past its critical accumulation. A block keeps homes in proportion to its home trips that travel without failing. Through traffic always travels.
Two modes: Over-allocation check: is the design over-allocated, and how many homes per block survive? Each block can keep at most the homes the design draws there. Full-day runs then scale the planner's homes until the most loaded region peaks at 0.90 to 0.95 of its critical accumulation: the validated homes. Sensitivity map: the same homes free to move between blocks. It shows where the network has most room; it is not a plan, and its homes do not hold over a full day. Each mode's traffic underlay is its full-day run.
Columns: One per development block. The wireframe is the homes the design proposes, the solid column the validated homes (over-allocation check) or the homes the planner accepts. Labels read proposed / validated or proposed / accepted; the tooltip gives all three. Coloured by homes, or by the change from proposed: orange fewer, blue more.
Fundamental diagram: Vehicles in a region (across) against vehicle-km per hour (up), in 5-minute steps. The red line marks the critical accumulation: in the district, the load at which the stress runs fell to half of free-flow speed.
Scenario: The Tanjong Pagar waterfront scenario was designed by Tanvi Maheshwari at the Future Cities Laboratory for her ETH Zurich doctoral thesis and simulated by Pieter Fourie in Sketch MATSim. It is the test case of their two joint papers (Journal of Urban Design; Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A).
Caveat: Indicative only: a Future Cities Laboratory research design for the waterfront, not today's streets or an adopted plan. Car trips only, one seed, no calibration. The planner did not converge in either mode, and a full-day run of its homes loads the roads differently from its morning peak, which is why the over-allocation check validates over full days. The validated homes rest on one seed and are approximate (see the stories).
